Nintendo's Virtual Boy app on Nintendo Classics is adding two games that, until now, nobody outside Nintendo had ever actually played. Zero Racers and D-Hopper — both finished, both cancelled — arrive August 4.

Zero Racers was built as a 3D racer in the same family as F-Zero, reportedly completed and ready to ship in 1996. It never got the chance — by then the Virtual Boy had already flopped commercially, and Nintendo quietly shelved the project along with a chunk of the system's back half of planned software.

D-Hopper has a similarly quiet history. Developed by Intelligent Systems under the working title Dragon Hopper, it's an action game following Prince Dorin as he works through a series of stages, taking down bosses to rescue his loved ones and save his kingdom. Like Zero Racers, it was finished enough to release and simply never did.

Both require the pricier Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack tier to access, same as the rest of the Virtual Boy library. They'll land alongside a new screen color customization feature for the Virtual Boy app — hold the right stick and use L and R to cycle through color options, a small concession to the original hardware's divisive monochrome red display.

It's a neat bit of preservation: two games that were fully built and simply never saw daylight, finally playable three decades later.
